Powerful engine tuning and exclusive accessories that leave nothing to be desired: TechArt Automobildesign also offers an extensive customization program for the new 997-series models Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and 4S.

TechArt also provides engine tuning for both water-cooled six-cylinder engines of the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, coupe or cabriolet. The TechArt power kits TA 097/1 for the 3.6-liter version and TA 097/S1 for the Carrera S with 3.8-liter displacement each consist of a sport air filter and newly programmed engine electronics.

After the installation, which can be done directly at TechArt Automobildesign or by any authorized Porsche dealer, maximum power output for each model increases by 15 hp / 11 kW.

Performance improves accordingly: Depending on vehicle weight and the type of tires acceleration time from 0 – 100 km/h improves by slightly under half a second. Top speed increases by some 5 km/h. Even more important for everyday use is the even more spontaneous throttle response and the further improved liveliness of the tuned engines.

The perfect complement to the power kits is TechArt exhaust tuning, of which various versions are available. The product lineup includes oval-shaped dual tailpipes for the production exhaust system, a throttle-controlled sport exhaust system and a complete high-performance exhaust system with high-performance manifolds, sport catalysts and rear muffler.

Sporty elegance characterizes the design of the TechArt aerodynamic-enhancement kit: The production front apron receives more visual emphasis from the TechArt front spoiler. But that’s not all: The spoiler reduces aerodynamic lift, thus further improving directional stability at high speeds.

The alternatively available TechArt Type II front apron with integrated splitter produces downforce on the front axle and supplies lots of fresh air to the coolers and front brakes via larger, distinctively styled air intakes.

The TechArt side sills give the sportscar a longer, sleeker look. The understated TechArt rear spoiler optimizes the effect of the retractable production rear spoiler and lends the cabriolet an even more exciting appearance.

TechArt also developed a rear diffuser for the 997 models, which extends the rear apron downward and provides a dramatic backdrop for the two oval-shaped twin tailpipes of the TechArt sport exhaust system.

TechArt also offers an extensive wheel and suspension program: Owners of the new Porsche 911 Carrera or Carrera S can refine their cars with striking, light-weight TechArt Formula five-spoke wheels with 18-, 19- or 20-inch diameters.

The most exclusive version for the 911 Carrera 4 or 4S features one-piece TechArt Formula light-alloy wheels in size 8.5Jx20 in front and in size 12Jx20 on the rear axle. TechArt recommends ContiSportContact 2 tires in sizes 235/30 ZR 20 and 305/25 ZR 20 for mounting on these wheels.

Custom-calibrated to the TechArt tire/wheel combinations are the TechArt suspension solutions. The range of modifications starts with TechArt sport springs for a ride-height lowering of some 25 millimeters. It culminates in the TechArt Vario sport suspension that was developed in cooperation with Bilstein. Contrary to conventional coil-over suspensions this innovative solution not only offers the ability to lower the ride-height on front and rear axle individually by up to some 35 millimeters; the TechArt Vario sport suspension also features sport shocks with adjustable bound and rebound. This allows the suspension set-up to be adjusted to individual driver’s preferences and to the predominant use of the car – on public roads or on the racetrack.

TechArt Automobildesign also offers a height-adjustable coil-over sport suspension for the 997 models with PASM.

For the 997 model series TechArt also offers sport sway bars, a dome cross-brace, and a high-performance brake system with eight-piston aluminum fixed calipers and 365- or 380-millimeter brake discs.

As a world-renowned specialist for exclusive interior creations TechArt Automobildesign also offers individual interiors for the latest 911 Carrera 4 and 4S in all colors and designs.

The program comprises exclusive TechArt Colorline fully leather interiors as well as sporty accessories: TechArt offers ergonomically shaped airbag sport steering wheels, foot pedals, foot rest and shift knob all made from aluminum as well as stainless-steel sill plates with TechArt logo.

2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

2:16 AM

Well, you knew this was coming. Porsche has followed up the debut of its freshened 997 rear-wheel-drive range with the introductions of the all-wheel-drive 2009 911 Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S. Visually, the C4 and C4S are immediately distinguishable from their 2WD counterparts via the red reflector strip spanning the width between the taillamps. That's a nice touch that brings back some fond memories of the 911s of our youth. The C4's rear bodywork is also wider than that of the 2WD cars. Up front, you'll find the same schnoz introduced a couple of weeks ago.

As with the Carrera and Carrera S, the C4 range also gets the new, direct-injected engines and the optional seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) twin-clutch gearbox. Power is up, and so is efficiency, while emissions output goes down. The Carrera 4's 3.6L flat six makes a stout 345 horses, and the step-up Carrera 4S pumps out 385 ponies from its 3.8. It's not just the engine and tranny that are new -- the previous car's all-wheel-drive system has now been replaced by Porsche Traction Management, which trickles down to the C4 from the mighty 911 Turbo. Want to scoff at lousy weather
and still drive a 911? Come October (in Europe) your new ride will be waiting.
2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Front Three Quarter View

Climbing into a Porsche 911 is always good for one's spirits. The story with this car is the PDK (Porsche's dual-clutch automatic) transmission, and I have a few thoughts on that: First, Porsche got the hardest part right, which is to say they tuned the initial clutch engagement for a smooth step-off. If you think that'd be easy, try driving a Lamboghini with e-Gear or a Nissan GT-R sometime. Second, the shifts seem really, really quick to me. I don't know how many milliseconds they quote, but it feels as fast as a Ferrari sequential-manual box.

However, the shift buttons on the steering wheel are super-lame. Here's how you do a paddle-shift: You mount big-ass levers on either side of the steering column, with left for down and right for up. That's it. That's how Ferrari and Lamborghini do it (not to mention Mitsubishi) and it works. But it's like Porsche can't admit that the Italians got it right, so they have this weird button system that's less intuitive and offers the tactility of a PlayStation controller. Come on, Porsche. Just admit that Ferrari knows what they're doing on this one.

My other beef is just with a non-manual 911 in general. One of the pleasures of a 911 is listening to that grumbling exhaust note, and a clutch gives you more freedom to play around. Not just blipping the throttle, but even when you're parking, you can rev it up a little bit as you let the clutch out, blip it some, make it sound like a high-strung beast that doesn't want to go quietly in to that good parking spot. With the computer in control, you just park. That's it. Part of the glee of 911 ownership, neutered.

One other thought concerns the seats. I am not Andre the Giant, and at about six feet, 180 pounds, I am too wide for the seats. The 911 seats look like they were molded around Mary Kate Olsen's shoulder bones. What gives? Germans are a hearty, schnitzel-eating people. They are deluding their beefy, beer-swilling Hun selves by building seats sized for tapeworm-infested woodland fairies.

Ducati Monster 795 India bound; Global launch in under 2 weeks!

9:39 PM

Ducati Monster 795

God bless Free Trade Agreements. India and Thailand, incidentally have a free trade agreement which allows export of many goods between the two countries at lower duty rates. For us automobile enthusiasts, it means cheaper automobiles. For instance, many of the engine parts of the superbly priced Honda CBR250R arrive into India from Thailand and in the coming months, many of the Honda Brio’s parts will be exported to Thailand.

So, there indeed has been an increase in bilateral trade between the two countries. Coming straight to the point, this Indo-Thai FTA will result in cheaper Ducatis. Iconic Italian motorcycle maker Ducati will woo the moneyed Indian motorcycling enthusiast with a LoCo Ducati Monster 795, which will be assembled at the Italian motorcycle maker’s Thailand plant. This said, the Monster 795 will still use top spec Ducati quality parts that the Italian firm will source from all across the world.

2011 Valentino Rossi Ducati Monster Art

2011 Valentino Rossi Ducati Monster Art Edition used an illustration

Basically, the motorcycle which will arrive into India will be in a lower state of tune than the current Monster 796, and along with that will cost significantly lower than the Ducati Minster 796, which retails for around INR 8 Lakh currently. So, a price of about 6 Lakh Rupees for the Ducati Monster 795 looks very alluring indeed considering the tremendous heritage and lineage Brand Ducati is known for. Currently, the Monster 796 featuring an L-Twin air cooled motor produces 87 Bhp.

The new Ducati’s engine might be detuned for a lower power output to position it as an entry level Ducati for the South East Asian markets that includes India too, where Ducati offers almost all of its global models. The branding and the sheer aura of the Ducati brand aside, performance enthusiasts might still want to stick to motorcycles like the Kawasaki Ninja 650R or the Hyosung 650R as maintaining a Ducati is quite expensive compared to other Japanese motorcycle brands. All said, watch out for the MotoGP weekend on October 20-21st when the Ducati Monster 795 will be launched at Sepang, Malaysia.

Winter Bike Modifications Part 1 – R&G’ing The 250R

9:38 PM

Owning a motorbike isn’t just about the riding, or the excuse to wear leather trousers or even the extra exercise from running between bike and house after forgetting phone, wallet, keys, gloves, earplugs etc. For many riders - no I’m going to say for all riders, it is also about customising your ride to some extent thus producing something individual and unique to the rider: if we wanted to blend in we’d have bought a 5 door hatchback.

Bajaj to launch new KRR ZX 150 mini Ninja racer in India

honda cbr250r 9:37 PM

After the launch of Honda CBR250R, Bajaj Ninja 250R has faced a stern test. They have failed to compete with Honda CBR250R majorly due to the heavy difference in their price tags. But Bajaj wants to get back in the game by launching a cheaper Ninja motorcycle which will be powered by a 150cc engine named KRR ZX 150 mini.

Although a 150 cc bike cannot be seriously compared with a 250 cc mammoth, the tech specs of the new KRR ZX 150 mini-Ninja suggest otherwise. A two stroke, single cylinder liquid cooled 148 cc engine delivers a stormy 30.0 PS power at 10,500 rpm. The torque is rates at a high 21.6 Nm at 9000 rpm. Equipped with a SUPER KIPS valve system and a MIKUNI VM28 unit the carburetted bike delivers good performance across the entire power range.

An aluminium swing arm stabilizer enhances left to right cornering. The bike employs telescopic front shocks and rear monoshock suspensions and uses dual-calliper ventilated brakes for both the wheels. The bike is being tested for Indian and other Asian markets.

Honda CBR250R review

Honda CBR250R review

After riding Honda’s CBR250R at the press presentation earlier this year, I wondered if it had the makings of an all-rounder. I’d been considering which was the smallest and most economical motorcycle you could buy to do everything, from commuting to covering long distances, even touring, with some more interesting, sportier stuff thrown in now and then. So I borrowed one from Honda for a couple of months to see.

It looks like a bigger bike, with bodywork following Honda’s new “layered” look, and it has a fresh, sleek appeal. And why not? Just because your bike is primarily a day-to-day workhorse doesn’t mean it has to look dull.

Beneath the skin lives a low-tech, single-cylinder motorcycle designed to be built in low labour-cost countries: British models are made in Honda’s Thailand factory, others are produced in India, so its credentials as a workhorse are in place.

The engine does the job in urban environments, if in a rather unexciting manner. It chugs into life very quietly and as long as you use its middle rev range and accept the modest performance, it becomes reasonably enjoyable, feeling willing and crisp enough to bowl you along at a good pace.

At higher revs the engine gets buzzy and breathless, however, and while it’s capable of propelling you to an indicated 85mph and sometimes more, conditions have to be just right. A recent 500-mile motorway round trip was very hard work as much of it was into a headwind. Throw in a hill and the gearbox had to be worked, too, with the top speed dropping to little more than HGV pace.

Honda CBR250R review

9:33 PM

After Honda launched their iconic 250cc motorcycle, CBR250R in the Indian auto industry earlier this year in March, they have managed to capture a decent market share. Available in two variants, one without ABS, priced at Rs 1.51 lacs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and the other with ABS priced at Rs 1.77 lacs (ex-showroom, New Delhi), CBR250R is available in 3 vibrant colors.

Powered by a 250cc water cooled engine, Honda CBR250R is one of the powerful motorcycles available in India today. Generating a cool 26 bhp, Honda CBR250R smoothly accelerates from 0-100 in just 8 seconds and has a top speed of 160 kmph. Honda has installed a 6 speed gearbox in the CBR250R.

On the handling and on road performance of Honda CBR250R, we felt that it will be difficult to use the motorcycle for everyday use, but will be a charm for touring and weekend getaways. Seating is comfortable and so are the shock absorbers. Thanks to the wider tires, most of the potholes on Indian roads seem less irritating on the CBR250R.

Just like other CBR variants, this one too looks very stylish. On the front of the bike, there is a full fairing, a 55/60W powerful headlight, new LCD display which will display speedometer, engine temperature, rpm meter, odometer, clock, and fuel gauge. On the economy front, Honda CBR250R returns a mileage of 27 kmpl, which is very decent for such a powerful bike.

Hero MotoCorp mulls a 250cc bike for 2012: Big question is, will it be a cruiser?

9:31 PM
Choosing to go it alone after a split with long tine technology partner Honda, Hero MotoCorp will launch a premium motorcycle in 2012, and wait for this, the motorcycle will displace no less than 250cc. Given that Hero MotoCorp still has an engine sourcing agreement with Honda, a rehashed Honda CBR250R is what comes to mind immediately.

Hero MotoCorp Logo

But that isn’t really a viable option as Honda wouldn’t really want to deliver its flagship motorcycle to Hero MotoCorp on a platter, engine sharing be damned. Instead Hero MotoCorp might just be able to borrow Honda’s 250cc engine to be used in a different application such as a cruiser.

We broke a story about Hero MotoCorp planning a 250cc cruiser way back in February, and this latest development could have some connection with that. Hero MotoCorp for its part remains mum about this development even as a source close to Hero MotoCorp has made the following comment.

From the purport of the comment, while Hero MotoCorp might indeed be setting up a full fledged R&D unit to develop new products, results from the new Hero MotoCorp R&D facility could take some time to come. Until then though, Hero MotoCorp using Honda’s technology cannot be ruled out at all.

Hero Impulse 150 Dual Purpose Motorcycle

Hero Impulse 150 Dual Purpose Motorcycle

For instance, Hero MotoCorp will launch two new products very soon, the 150cc Impulse On-Off road dual purpose motorcycle and a 110cc scooter called the Maestro. Both these products’ engines have been sourced from Honda under the engine licensing deal that hero MotoCorp currently has in place with erstwhile Japanese partner Honda.

Therefore, the CBR250R’s technology packed engine being used in the new 250cc motorcycle Hero MotoCorp seems to be developing is something that could very well be the case given that th second half of 2012 isn’t very far away and the fact that Hero MotoCorp’s fledgling R&D division is yet to produce any results worth the mention.

Also, the 250cc engine might be used in a cruiser application as Honda might not have any qualms with that given that a cruiser sits in a completely different segment when compared to the Honda CBR250R which is a sportsbike. Watch this space.
